Having Stories Heard

With a fried group of riders and crew the Team decided to shorten the day’s ride. That said, the hills of northern Ontario were in full effect and the entire day was spent either going up or down tracing the northern shore of Lake Superior. With a short bench we worked hard and well. The chilly temperatures continued and were complimented by rain, hail, snow and sunshine.

We were also guests at an elementary school where we shared our story and had a story shared with us. When it came time for question and answers, the second question was more of a statement: his younger brother had died of cancer. Apparently he had not shared this with the school. We asked him about his name and his story. I still find it surprising the “secrecy” around childhood cancer but for whatever reason a stigma of sorts remains. Interesting that today was the day we saw the Terry Fox memorial as he was largely responsible for getting people to talk about cancer. Hopefully by sharing our stories it will be easier for others to do the same.
